Cobra Kai is back with a new season after season four ended with a shocking surprise earlier this year. With nine months into the popular show’s fifth season, no time is wasted diving right into the drama that unfolds after the All Valley Tournament finale in which dojo Terry Silver finally wins it all. This is the scenario that fans always ask when it comes to Karate Kid movies when Daniel LaRusso loses to Cobra Kai. The show captured that feeling in Season 5.

If there’s one thing that makes Cobra Kai a success every season, it’s that it’s the perfect callback to the original film franchise, and while it’s a shame Pat Morita isn’t there to see all the love the series has gotten, we have another main character returning and this time chozen Yuji Okumoto came to save Daniel. Even though Chozen is the main antagonist of The Karate Kid Part II, it’s amazing how his relationship with Daniel has developed over the years.

Season five begins with Miguel Diaz struggling to find his father in Mexico. Meanwhile, Daniel (Macchio) worries at the thought of Terry Silver’s Cobra Kai getting more kids to join the dojo after winning the All Valley tournament. With the help of , LaRusso plans to fix it again. Johnny on the other hand, travels to Mexico in search of Miguel, who left without telling anyone. While also trying to mend his relationship with his own son Robbie Johnny suggests the two go on a journey to track down Miguel. Terry Silver’s growing threat is all that Daniel is concerned about, and how he deals with it is a major theme this season.

One thing that’s consistent for all seasons of Cobra Kai is that the series is rich in drama but, while silly, never seems to be boring. This also applies to the new season. Despite getting off to a slow start, he is expected to deliver some big blows this season given that opponents like Terry Silver are not regular players. Playing with nostalgia once again, there are times when the show takes us back to the Karate Kid movies, and it’s amazing how rarely flashbacks feel forced. In my opinion, it’s surprising how Cobra Kai, despite its repetitive nature, transitions from one season to the next without being tiresome.

There’s no hiding that the show remains at its best when focused on fight sequences and karate moves as opposed to being immersed in drama. While the start of Season 5 seems weaker on the action front, it promises that the rest of the season will be bolder and bloodier. To think that Daniel is still upset about Cobra Kai’s power after all these years seems ridiculous, and the conversations between him and his wife, Courtney Hengeler’s Amanda LaRusso, make for some of the most authentic moments in the melodramatic show. The show makes perhaps the most insightful observation through Amanda’s character.

One of the highlights of Cobra Kai’s acting is Xolo Mariduea’s consistently strong performances. It was his performance that stood out from the younger players. As for the elders, Yuji Okumoto brought a lot of humor this season with Chozen’s antics. As for Zabka and Macchio, the duo sometimes feel they are still the same guy from Karate Kid, except for their physical aging. It’s hard to see Macchio and Zabka outside of their characters, we’re so used to seeing them as Daniel and Johnny.

Cobra Kai Season 5 got off to a great start, and from the way the first episode started, it looks like the rest of the show has some big twists.
